Lighting Ceremony [2021]

North Idaho. Coeur d'Alene. Downtown. Darkness covers while white lights decorate naked trees. Crowds line the street. Conversing. Laughing. Our family congregates and waits to meet friends and family. The annual Lighting Ceremony and Fireworks begins with a parade down Sherman Avenue.

The parade begins and ends. "Merry Christmas" exchanges. A mass of people walks—as one—down the street towards Lake Coeur d'Alene. Greetings to old friends and new acquaintances.

We make our way to the American Flag and stand, waiting. Candles acquired. Dark field. 'Silent Night' sung in one accord. Candles lit. Passing flame to wick. The once dark field now illuminated by the light of hundreds of candles. The first of fireworks explode overhead. The aroma of candle's wax and mortars mingles.

Finale.

Visiting our friends at CDA Idaho Clothing Company; talking with old friends. Peruse. Scent of Up North Goods candles fills nostrils.

The Christmas season is officially here.
