“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in Me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be My disciples. As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you. Abide in My love.”
— John 15:4-9
The definition of "abide"—meno—is to endure without yielding, remain; to accept (without objection) or act in accordance with. A "culture" is a set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution or organization. In John 15, Jesus exhorts us to “Abide in My love.”
“Whoever says he abides in God ought to walk in the same way in which Jesus walked.”
— 1 John 2:6
'Abide Culture Coffee Roasters' started as a dream. Long hours conversing around our second-hand wooden kitchen table; discussions while sitting upon our fraying living room couch late into the night. Backyard research and conversations underneath a wisteria-covered pergola, laden with fragrant flowering peapods. Classical education approach: hands-on learning and teaching; trial and error. Sacrifice. Hard work. Continual prayer combined with mustard seed faith: these attributes propel us forward. A small, shed shell has been transformed into a usable workspace—our roastery—which we lovingly call "The Roasting Shed".
“Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ.”
— Colossians 3:23-24
— Colossians 3:23-24
Abide Culture Coffee Roasters' humble beginnings began in North Idaho. 208. The Gem State. Summer stars prick a black construction paper firmament as yesterday's fractured fragments of ancient light shines down; warm nights saturate the shed as the massive Milky Way rises above our roastery and stretches the heavens. Familia converses around a backyard fire pit, dug into earth, encompassed by rock; flame licks marshmallows while they toast golden-brown; slowly becoming glue for s'mores. Bats ballet. Pacific Tree Frogs—Pseudacris Regilla—sleep upon concrete patio. The elusive Blue-tailed Skink—Plestiodon Skiltonianus—darts, crawls, and zig-zags looking for safety. Constructed cold constellations freckle the heavens: the Little Dipper pours into the Big Dipper; Cassiopeia looks on. Orion climbs; his belt girded in place by the three sisters: Alnitak, Alnilam, and Mintaka. Perseids etch dark sky's expanse. Polaris. Vega. Capella. Northern Lights arch; an arras of hues weaved and daubed.
“And, "You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of Your hands; they will perish, but You remain; they will all wear out like a garment, like a robe You will roll them up, like a garment they will be changed. but You are the same, and Your years will have no end."”

New wisteria climbs upon old wood attached to rustic pergola placed over roastery's entrance. Fragrant feast of nectar for Abide Hollow Apiary. Pea pods swell. Pea pods burst. Pea pods bloom. Bees buzz. Honeysuckle grows. Honey flow. Honey harvest. Wildflowers beckon. Lavender and Lilac. Saplings of Giant Sequoias planted. Axis spins. Fall turns summer's deep greens into a kaleidoscope of burnt oranges, yellows, and reds; a cold chill encompasses the air as crunchy leaves, portrayed in October's tones, break underfoot: remnants of a long-lost summer. Mercury drops like the snow; the shed warmed by the roaster's rotating red-hot drum while snow piles and quiets the outside world amid the dead days of winter; a blanket of white. Spring's sun renews life: a garden of sweet-smelling flowers grow in the shed's window boxes while Sol meets the waiting horizon to declare another day done; the opacity drops, casting brilliant colors through the glass of the roasting shed's windows. A gallery of our family's hand-drawn art framed and hanged—the Abide Exhibition—decorates the roastery: a medium spectrum of watercolors, dyed crayon wax, ink, and graphite perfects parchment as creativity grows; artistry imagined develops into actuality. Photography prints fill the gaps. Giclée. A freshly marked world map pinned with destinations visited. This is our definition of the Pacific Northwest. 47°40'11.6"N, 116°47'08.2"W. Upper Left. Sunrise to sunset. From sun up to sun down. Pacific roots. West Coast natives. Abide Hollow. Home.
"God's mercy is so great that you may sooner drain the sea of its water or deprive the sun of its light or make space too narrow than diminish the great mercy of God."
— Charles Spurgeon
Everything we do is by hand. Dialing in every small batch roast. Bean to Cup. Meticulously fine tuning and recording usable information next to a heated drum on rotation as coffee beans perform their dance—from green to yellow, cinnamon to brown—all the while using our senses to navigate; the scent of art's myrrh rolls, spills, and fills: permeates the roasting shed like smoke off an incense stick. Craft's fragrance envelops, stains, and invites; a bouquet of sight, sound, smell, and taste: tangible tapestry braided in a cacophony of senses hanging thick in an aromatic atmosphere.
"I would live in Christ's heart; in the clefts of that Rock my soul would eternally abide."
— Charles Spurgeon
Early mornings. Late nights. We all roast: each of us taking the helm of the roaster. Teaching and always learning. Accurately weighing beans. Checking each batch. Manually. Documenting. Pencil to paper. Graphing profiles. Cupping bowls and spoons; the sensory assessment of scent and taste. Triangle testing in the Abide Culture Coffee Lab; meticulously fine tuning and slight adjustments: from analyzing roasts to everyday indulging. Shared in our kitchen. Family discussions of notes experienced. Moments caught through F-stops and lens; digitally capturing analog life: digital papercuts. A recorded mixed tape of memories.
“The one who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him.
We know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.”
— 1 John 3:24
Stamping by each and every family member, from the oldest to the youngest; unique imperfections of ink, rubber, and paper: a symbiotic triune. Amplified tracks on shuffle: theology and doxology resonate, escaping cones and speakers, immersing the environment; analytical exponential earworms splinter, escaping speakers, penetrating mind, heart, and soul: lyrical doxogy mingles with craft's aromatic incense—knitted together in a pleasing aroma—curls and rises. Apologetics. Spoken word. Dancing. Laughing. Joking. Talking. Abide Acoustic Sessions. We truly are a small, independent, family owned business: roasting to cupping, stamping to bagging, in-house design. Simplicity. Modest. Maker's handmade touch. Our fingerprints adorn every aspect. Our DNA inhabits the fabric. Minute details. Roasted by hand. Tamped by hand. Steamed by hand. Free poured by hand. Created by hand. Crafted by hand.
“For if I preach the Gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting. For necessity is laid upon me.
Woe to me if I do not preach the Gospel!”
— 1 Corinthians 9:16
An "ethos" is a distinguishing character, sentiment, moral nature, or guiding belief of a person, group, or institution. The Abide Culture ethos is simple: to know God and make Him known; Christ centered, spread the Gospel, impact and inspire our local community, integrity, build relationships, and create super rad coffee while supporting ministries and missionaries that share the love of Christ. We are a Christian coffee roasting family.
“So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”
— 1 Corinthians 13:13
Abide Culture is more than brick and mortar; each and every item bought supports our family and our ministry: AB1DE. The purpose of AB1DE is to serve and support ministries that are dedicated to the spread of the Gospel, ministries reaching our local community, and missionaries abroad. Missionary work is near and dear to our heart as we have had the opportunity to take part in short term missions. 'Abide Culture Coffee Roasters' has had the ability to donate 1% of our sales to assist these ministries: Streetlights Bible, The Bible Project, Open Arms Pregnancy Care Center, Samaritan's Purse, UGM: Union Gospel Mission, and Bestowing the Basics. Our goal is to assist more ministries and missionaries with, and the expansion of: 'The ABIDE Project'; to become its own ministry to effectively exhort and serve our own local community while working side-by-side with missionaries overseas. The ABIDE Project dovetails AB1DE: it is the physical attribute, the outward extension, the continual work performed, the action of the ministry; the verb transitive. AB1DE is the heart; The ABIDE Project is the hands and feet of Abide Culture.
"The question is not what we intended ourselves to be,
but what He intended us to be when He made us.
He is the Inventor; we are only the machine.
He is the Painter; we are only the picture."
— C.S. Lewis [excerpt from his book "Mere Christianity"]
“Don't be selfish; don't try to impress others.
Be humble, thinking of others as
better than yourselves.”
better than yourselves.”
— Philippians 2:3
From the Abide family: we thank you for supporting us; from pop-ups to local markets, online purchases, and visiting us at our brick and mortar coffeeshop.
Trust the process; enjoy the journey. Stay Humble. Abide.
